AAR Japan

In the Bidibidi Refugee Settlement in north western Uganda, approximately 230,000 South Sudanese refugees who fled armed conflict in their country and residents live together. In this educational support project, AAR Japan organised a sports event to provide an opportunity for refugee children and local Ugandan children to deepen exchange through sports, foster friendship that transcends ethnicity, language and nationality, and promote mutual understanding.

Each primary school attended by refugee children has a diverse mix of ethnicities and languages; it is common for the diversity to trigger fights among children there. Moreover, some children bear psychological burdens caused by living in a different environment and having experienced armed conflict. To help alleviate the situation, we held a sports event and pre-event practice session for children to mutually understand each other by overcoming their ethnic differences and linguistic barriers and to be refreshed physically and mentally. We had children with different nationalities and ethnicities form mixed teams. The boys played football and the girls played football and netball to interact with each other.

Comments from Aya Fujita, staff member at the AAR Japan Uganda Office/Programme Coordinator

Feedback from Organize :

At the sports events, I heard comments from children such as, “our friendships deepened,” “I learned from new friends not to give up,” and “My teammates and I were able to encourage and help each other.” Children were able to express their feelings, such as joy, happiness and frustration, and share them with their teammates through playing sports, while developing friendships that transcend ethnic and linguistic boundaries.
