The Yomiuri Shimbun provided support to developing countries with the cooperation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Intending to popularize baseball in developing countries and create educational opportunities for young people, the support project developed two pillars: “The miracle of baseball used gloves” and “Providing programs to teach and promote baseball.”

Additionally, the project members called out on nationwide readers to donate used baseball equipment through newspaper ads, and as a result, the national baseball tournament venues for school children received 4,532 pieces of equipment. This is nearly three times the number of equipment received compared to the first year and was shipped to a total of 12 countries, including Uganda and Burkina Faso, by JICA.

We were able to increase the number of target countries from last year’s five countries. Also, coach Daijiro Tanaka of the baseball class “Giants Academy” run by the Yomiuri Giants, visited Thailand and taught children in the country practical baseball skills.

Feedback from :

Comments from a 12-year-old boy in Burkina Faso:
Even if I had a friend who wanted to play baseball, I could not invite him because I didn't have the equipment. I am happy to be able to play with my friend now.

Comments from JICA volunteer base in Fiji:
Children love baseball equipment and want to keep their bats and tattered gloves that cannot be repaired. The donated equipment was in good condition and I was surprised by the high awareness of the Japanese baseball game.
