The 5th International Budo Culture Seminar for Foreign Exchange Students and Others (2023)
【Project Activities】
For foreign exchange students studying in Japan and foreign officials working at embassies in Japan, we conducted lectures and practical sessions on the history, theory, and techniques of Budo, a traditional Japanese culture, along with hands-on experience in nine modern Budo disciplines.
【Project Background】
This initiative began in FY2018 with the hope that international students visiting Japan to study its language and culture would also learn Budo. The project also aims to facilitate the international promotion of Budo by encouraging participants to share its appeal upon returning to their home countries.
【Project Objective】
To contribute to the international understanding and development of Budo, while fostering international friendship and goodwill through Budo.
【Project Area】
Promotion of sports
【Methods】
Hosting seminars and forums
【Outcomes】
To help participants connect with the “Shin” (spirit) aspect of “Shin-Gi-Tai” (mind, technique, and body) essential in Budo, we incorporated lectures on calligraphy and Zen. This allowed participants to deepen their perspective on Budo and apply these insights to their practical training.
【Voices from Participants and Partners】
“I have come to deeply understand not only the techniques of Budo but also its spirit. This has deepened my interest in Budo and increased my motivation to continue studying it.”
【Challenges and Lessons Learned】
Although 30 minutes were allocated for each Budo experience, the time was too short for many disciplines, allowing only for a superficial introduction. Determining how to secure sufficient time within a limited schedule remains a key challenge for future sessions.
