Japan Sports Agency Commissioned Project: JSC/JOC/NF Use Nishigaoka High Performance Center and Other Facilities for Collaboration Project (Gymnastics, South Africa)
South Africa still needs to make much progress in gymnastics. We invited the men’s gymnastics team from the South African Gymnastics Federation for them to see the training environment in Japan, and for us to assist the gymnasts and coaches. Among the African countries, South Africa is the country which has the highest chance of going to the Olympic Games. We would like to help liven up gymnastics on the African continent.
Training Sessions: 9:30 – 11:30 am, 2:00 – 5:00 pm
Training details: As described below
Morning: Stretching and warming-up with due consideration for individual gymnasts (30 minutes), basic skill training (30 min), mastering basic skills on the pommel horse and parallel bars (30 min each, total 60 min)
Afternoon: Warming-up (30 min), tumbling trampoline (20 min), mastering skills on floor exercises, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar (120 min/four to six apparatus per day), cool-down (10 min)
Notes:
– We provided assistance on warming-up and how to enhance bodybuilding and flexibility geared to the characteristics unique to gymnastics. We also used the tumbling trampoline for acquiring basic skills.
– Since they were preparing for the African Gymnastics Championships coming up in March, we gave suggestions on pre-game training methods.
– We also offered assistance on the skills they were currently working on or had worked on in the past.
We noticed that their training exercise was effectively composed, following the methodology we had introduced to them over the years. During the camp we could see that their skills improved significantly. In the future, we will focus on presenting specific step-by-step training methods to prepare for competitions. They need to be well-informed of the current scoring rules in deciding their programme components. At the same time, improving Execution score performance is important to accumulate points, if any, and wrap up the entire programme. It is also essential to design the programme to avoid major errors. The training sessions revealed that they acquired both the basic skills and those of higher difficulty as well. We look forward to seeing further improvement in their competitive strength.
Feedback from Participant :
We’re very grateful that we got a chance to come to Japan several times. We learnt so much from Japanese coaches and also had much fun. We’ve been training with method Mr. Tachibana told us and really hope this help us come back to Tokyo again this summer for Olympic Games.
