【Japan】Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament 2019
The Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament is now in its 20th year. The basic idea of the tournament is to support the sound development of youth, promote rugby and enhance competitiveness, and support international exchange among different cultures through rugby. The lodging facilities are located within the tournament facilities, and as a result, they are used not only for competition, but also for living. This provides opportunities for communication among the athletes and contact with different cultures during their day-to-day activities, raising mutual understanding.
A league is formed from 16 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams, and a final tournament is held to determine the champion. During the tournament period, in addition to matches, there is also a welcome party, a social event where coaches can learn from other coaches from around the world, exhibition matches that enable players who have few opportunities to participate to gather from different teams and form select teams for matches, and various other events that can be experienced only at the tournament.
At the welcome party, athletes from each country gathered and sang “We Are the World,” achieving exchanges that go beyond rugby.
Athletes also participated in the i-PLAY TRUE Relay, a programme of the Japan Anti-Doping Agency implemented in the lead up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020. During the i-PLAY TRUE Relay, participants considered the value and power of sports.
