Support was provided by serving as an occupational therapist for athletes and other members of the Sudan delegation to the Special Olympics Middle-East/North Africa 9th Regional Games. Support was provided from November 2017 to March 2018 at practice sessions and training camps in Sudan and at the games.

Occupational therapy evaluations were conducted of each member of the delegation including Sudanese athletes and volunteers and occupational therapy was performed with a focus on guidance for enhancing physical and mental function and on improving the content and environment of practices, improving time management, activities of daily living, and lifestyle management, and proper etiquette as national representatives. Sudanese athletes participated in track and field at the Special Olympics Middle-East/North Africa Regional Games, winning a total of 17 metals.

Feedback from Local Contacts :

I am extremely grateful for the instruction that was provided by the occupational therapist on a range of topics from physical function, higher brain function training, activities of daily living, training, training to act as a group, time management, and other lifestyle management training to sports guidance. Team member Iwabuki gave objectives and honest opinions whether the other person was a child or an adult and we trusted him [her]. S/he taught a way of viewing things that is different from our own, leading to enhanced quality of activity.
