【Project Activities】

In cooperation with the Cambodia Paralympic Committee, we support persons with disabilities through sports. We are working on creating mechanisms for persons with disabilities to participate in sports and on awareness-raising activities for sports for persons with disabilities.

– Support for participation in the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon

– Support for participation in the Kasumigaura Marathon

– Support for holding Para Athletics Championships

– Creation of photo essays and videos of para-athletes, and holding photo exhibitions.

【Project Background】

In Cambodia, it was difficult for persons with disabilities to integrate into society due to discrimination and inadequate social systems. Since its establishment, Heart of Gold has been working to create opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in society, wishing for them to overcome their disabilities through the power of sports, such as by creating a system for disabled runners to participate in the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon (AWHM).

【Project Objective】

– Creating opportunities for social participation for persons with disabilities

– Empowerment of persons with disabilities

– Raising awareness of sports for persons with disabilities

【Project Area】

Para Sports

【Methods】

Event/Competition Support

【Outcomes】

– Increased number of persons with disabilities participating in sports

– Improved understanding of disabilities- Improved quality of life for persons with disabilities

【Voices from Participants and Partners】

Person with a disability: “Before starting sports, I was lonely and tended to stay at home, but by participating in sports, I met peers with similar disabilities, and by practicing together and competing, I was able to become a national athlete and gain confidence in myself.”

Photo exhibition attendee (general public): “I hadn’t thought much about persons with disabilities before, but this has made me want to think about and be mindful of disabilities in my daily life.”

【Challenges and Lessons Learned】

For the development of sports for persons with disabilities, it is important for the government and the public to understand disabilities. We believe that by not only supporting persons with disabilities but also creating opportunities for everyone to participate in sports together regardless of disability (inclusive sports), understanding of disabilities will be further promoted.
