Support for a Japanese-Style Sports Day (Undokai) (2023)
【Project Activities】
On October 14, 2023, we supported the hosting of a sports festival at Liberty International School. The festival divided each grade into two teams and competed in a red-vs-white format. Like a Japanese undokai, points were awarded for each event and the winner was decided by total points. The program combined Japanese undokai events—such as tug-of-war, ball toss, and large-ball relay—with performance elements often used overseas, creating an international sports festival blending Japanese and overseas cultures.
【Project Background】
Active Life provides sports activities for Japanese and foreign residents in Japan, aiming to contribute to mutual understanding, cooperation, and community-building among people living in local communities through sport.
【Project Objective】
Children practiced repeatedly in PE classes toward the festival and did their best on the day. In this two-team festival, we saw children cooperate and cheer for one another across grade levels, and we also saw them respect opponents beyond team lines.
【Project Area】
Education through Sport
【Methods】
Dispatching and hosting coaches and instructors
【Outcomes】
Many parents gathered to watch their children in action, and the venue was filled with cheering voices and the children’s fighting spirit. In the final tug-of-war event, parents also participated, and parents and all children were able to enjoy the competition together. This sports festival—an extraordinary experience through sport—taught children the importance of doing their best, the joy of cooperation and unity, and respect for others. Such a special space also provided energy that can carry forward as a lasting memory. It also inspired and energized parents as they witnessed children’s efforts. Through cross-grade exchange and intergenerational sports exchange with parents, the festival also moved closer to the “harmony” that Active Life aims to foster through sport.
【Voices from Participants and Partners】
