Rwanda Golf Sheroes Project (R.G.S.P.) (2022)
【Project Activities】
For female junior and youth golfers. To date, activities have included providing test golf lessons, signing MoUs with Rwandan government organizations and sports promotion groups, developing local partners and sponsors, and creating a program development schedule.
【Project Background】
Despite the abundance of talented and passionate female athletes in Rwanda and other African countries, their potential has often been wasted. This is due to a lack of funding and coaching, as well as social and traditional biases rooted in patriarchy, which suggest that women should remain at home focusing on domestic duties rather than participating in sports.
【Project Objective】
The project aims to identify talented female athletes in Rwanda and provide them with world-class golf training—a fusion of Japanese and Korean expertise—free of charge. By maximizing their potential, we seek to develop world-class female professional golfers and coaches. This process not only aims to address gender inequality in the African sports world but also contributes to regional economic development and security by developing the golf industry and associated employment opportunities.
【Project Area】
【Methods】
【Outcomes】
Although still in the preparation and pre-research stage, the junior and youth female golfers who received test lessons, along with their parents, government officials, and sports promotion organizations, have expressed a strong desire for continuous and formal lesson provision.
【Voices from Participants and Partners】
It is a program rarely found in Japan, and I am highly satisfied to have been able to take this course.(Participant)
【Challenges and Lessons Learned】
Key challenges include securing continuous funding, recognizing the difference between “Sports for Development” and “Development of Sports,” and respecting the different senses of speed and commitment in African vs. Japanese business cultures. In the future, sharing knowledge that helps improve hospitality, service quality, productivity, and trust-building will be essential.
