Republic of Indonesia × Japan Clothed Swimming&Olympians Action Project (2023)
【Summary】
In Indonesia, where large-scale floods such as storms and torrential rains occur every year due to rising sea levels and climate change, resulting in many casualties, “Clothed Swimming Project”’ was implemented, which taught participants how to protect themselves during floods, the correct way to wear a life jacket, how to float and swim, among other things.
The program also included an event (beach clean-up activities) to raise awareness of environmental issues (especially marine pollution) that cause climate change. The implementation of this project has led to foster the local leaders of “Clothed Swimming” and ‘beach clean-up” projects in Indonesia in the future.
【Project Objective】
This project was conducted in alignment with the new collaboration area of ‘Sports Management’, especially the ‘Capacity Development Program for Sports Professionals (Capacity Development Program for Leaders and Retired Athletes)’ in the ‘Chiang Mai Declaration on Strengthening ASEAN-Japan Sports Cooperation towards 2030’ adopted in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on 1 September 2023. The program was also implemented with the aim of development and implementation of post-career for coaches and athletes.
By having socially influential Olympians lead this project, it is expected to positively influence more coaches and retired athletes. Increasing the number of the leaders will accelerate the spread of this movement within the country.

Feedback from Local Contacts :
It was the first time for the WOA to implement such a program for Sport x SDGs in the ASEAN region, but I commend the excellent cooperation between Japan and Indonesia and Indonesians’ good understanding of the main purpose of the program, which brought together many Olympians to implement it.
