Promoting Peace Education through Sport (2023)1

【Project Activities】

We delivered a two-day training on our Peace Programme (Conflict Management, Self‑Esteem, and Nonviolence) for national coaches and athletes from the Philippine Obstacle Sports Federation.

【Project Background】

The Philippine Obstacle Sports Federation requested this training after learning about our peace education work with universities and sports organizations in Japan. By sharing the programme with national coaches and top athletes, we aimed to expand peace education to children across the Philippines.

【Project Objective】

To eliminate and reduce violence and harassment in the Philippine sports environment.

【Project Area】

Peacebuilding through Sport

【Methods】

Dispatching and hosting coaches and instructors

【Outcomes】

National coaches and top athletes from across the Philippines have returned to their communities and are now running the Peace Programme on a regular basis.

【Voices from Participants and Partners】

“I was surprised to learn that there are peaceful ways to resolve conflict. I realized how important it is to listen with empathy rather than simply offer advice. I want to bring the Peace Programme into my coaching.”

【Challenges and Lessons Learned】

We were informed by the Philippine organizers that one participant had attempted suicide due to domestic violence, which required us to adjust the programme content. It reaffirmed the importance of conducting background checks in advance.
