【Project Activities】

We run a year-round football league in Kibera, Kenya, involving roughly 1,400 children. On match days, we also provide meals and sanitary products. For details: https://a-goal.org/league-start/

【Project Background】

Since April 2020, A-GOAL has provided emergency food assistance in Kenya during the COVID-19 pandemic through local football clubs. Through that work, we connected with two Kenyan coaches working in Africa’s largest slum; inspired by their desire to “give children dreams through football,” we launched this activity.

【Project Objective】

By creating an environment where children can immerse themselves in football in Kibera—where crime rates are high—we aim to support healthy development and prevent delinquency. Through football, we also aim to create an environment where children can have dreams and realize them.

【Project Area】

【Methods】

【Outcomes】

Surveys of children and guardians participating in the league indicated an effect in preventing delinquency. Through league participation, some players obtained scholarships and entered secondary school, and some players were selected for Kenya’s youth national team.

【Voices from Participants and Partners】

【Challenges and Lessons Learned】

Securing funds to sustain the league and addressing unstable local security are challenges. Collaboration between Kenyan and Japanese stakeholders can create high community impact with relatively low investment. Communication among operating members is crucial. Having local networks enables us to challenge new initiatives, including partnerships with Japanese companies.
