Activities for Visually Impaired Girls (2024)
【Project Activities】
Implemented a program to promote participation and improve the quality of activities, including blind football, with the aim of increasing exercise opportunities for visually impaired children (especially girls) whose physical activity opportunities are limited.
【Project Background】
While blind football activities were conducted at the National School for the Blind, the problem was the limited opportunities and low number of visually impaired girls participating. The high barrier to entry for exercise in blind football was also a challenge.
【Project Objective】
To enable visually impaired children (especially young girls) to participate in activities, including blind football.
【Project Area】
Sports and physical development (Physical literacy development)
【Methods】
Provision of recreation
【Outcomes】
Provided activities supervised by Japanese visually impaired individuals to elementary school girls at the National School for the Blind. Videos were created so they could practice with family and friends even during vacations, with QR codes allowing them to watch videos of the rules.
【Voices from Participants and Partners】
Girls’ Coach: “Visually impaired girls were either napping or chatting during their free time; even if they wanted to exercise, they didn’t have the opportunity. I hope this will encourage them to exercise with friends.”
【Challenges and Lessons Learned】
Instead of creating special activity times, it’s important to normalize physical activity and provide a diverse range of exercises that better suit the children’s characteristics and preferences, thereby promoting continuous engagement.
