【Project Activities】

Provided opportunities for physical activity, especially for women and elementary/junior high school students, through 3×3 basketball, which can be easily enjoyed with a small number of people and in limited spaces. This also included team development and technical strengthening, as well as coaching for instructors, in preparation for the Pacific Mini Games to be held in Palau in July 2025.

【Project Background】

The Japanese student who interned through the Japanese Student Internship Support Project served as a coordinator. This enabled the realization of inviting players and coaches from the adult team “Arborata” from Tsukuba City, Japan, through an SFT Action Grant, and thus the project was implemented.

【Project Objective】

As Palau has a small population and limited land area, to provide easy opportunities for physical activity through 3×3 basketball (which requires minimal space, few players, and allows mixed genders) to a society suffering from obesity and lifestyle-related diseases.

With the Pacific Mini Games scheduled for July in the local area, small sessions were held between villages and schools, doubling as team selection, demonstrating continuity. The Palau team won a bronze medal, finishing 3rd overall at the Pacific Mini Games.

【Challenges and Lessons Learned】

Facility improvement. Due to the short duration (as Japanese participants were working adults) and scheduling conflicts with schools, participation from elementary school students was low.
