Obstacle Sports Referee Training Course (2024)

Obstacle Sports Referee Training Course (2024)1

【Project Activities】

In Yoshinogawa City, Tokushima Prefecture, the FISO Technical Committee Chair was invited to hold an International Level 1 Referee Training Course, where approximately 20 participants obtained referee qualifications. On the day following the course, participants performed practical officiating training during the “Obstacle Sports Demo Competition in Yoshinogawa.”

【Project Background】

There was an urgent need to develop referees who meet international standards for future competitions hosted by JOSA. Consequently, we requested FISO (the International Federation) to dispatch their Technical Committee Chair.

【Project Objective】

As Obstacle Sports is a new discipline, there were no qualified referees in Japan. Training referees to ensure strict rule enforcement was essential, and securing certified personnel was a critical task ahead of the Japan Championships scheduled for October of the same year.

【Project Area】

Sports Instructor Training

【Methods】

Dispatch and Invitation of Coaches/Instructors

【Outcomes】

As a result of the training, approximately 20 participants reached the Level 1 Referee standard. FISO certificates were subsequently sent to the successful candidates.

【Voices from Participants and Partners】

“The rules are now clear, and I have gained the confidence to officiate matches. I want to obtain Level 2 and 3 qualifications in the future and officiate at international competitions.”

【Challenges and Lessons Learned】

Due to language barriers and the need for a Japanese FISO Technical Committee member to interpret, time was insufficient, and the course felt rushed. Additionally, having only 20 domestic referees is absolutely insufficient for hosting large-scale competitions in the future.
