Minor Sports Promotion Project (2023)
【Project Activities】
To help prevent lifestyle diseases caused by physical inactivity in Cambodia, we implemented “minor sports” designed by high school students.
【Project Background】
In the Phnom Penh area, trends of lifestyle diseases related to overnutrition and lack of exercise had been observed. Another challenge in Cambodia is that people who do not prefer major sports have fewer opportunities to exercise. As part of global education, high school students addressed this issue through problem-based learning.
【Project Objective】
• Disseminate minor sports (six disciplines) in Cambodia as a trigger to reduce physical inactivity.
• Through problem-based learning, improve high school students’ problem-solving ability and intercultural understanding, and broaden their career options.
【Project Area】
Sport and School Health
【Methods】
Implementing sports activities at elementary schools and orphanages
【Outcomes】
We observed Cambodian children enjoying all six sports to the fullest. We also felt that each discipline had potential to take root in the elementary school and the orphanage where we implemented them. Post-training surveys of Japanese high school students suggested improvements in problem-solving ability and intercultural understanding, as well as a broader range of career choices.
