【Project Activities】

Japanese university students were dispatched to Cambodia and engaged in exchange through kendo.

【Project Background】

Implemented as one of the program themes.

【Project Objective】

Identify and nurture pro-Japan and Japan-informed individuals, and strengthen external communication.

【Project Area】

International exchange through sports

【Methods】

Dispatch of University Students

【Outcomes】

Promoted understanding of Japan and the host region as well as mutual understanding; participants shared their experiences and the appeal of Japan locally and via social media.

【Voices from Participants and Partners】

Participant: “Through this program, I was surprised that far more people were interested in kendo than I had imagined. I was especially happy that people took interest in what I have worked hard on for so long. International exchange programs in various sports and budo not only help participants see how their disciplines are received around the world, but are also beneficial to participants.” (Japanese university student)
Host: “It was a wonderful opportunity to promote mutual learning and improve kendo through meeting kendo athletes from other countries. Every moment was enjoyable, and I would like to participate again.” (Working adult)

【Challenges and Lessons Learned】

Because temperatures in Cambodia remain very high even in December, we would like to take even greater care with heat-stress prevention measures, such as longer breaks and frequent hydration.
