Preparatory Meeting for the Establishment of an International Federation (IF) for Mental Health Football (2022)
【Project Activities】
The international promotion and development of sports for people with mental health conditions have lagged significantly behind those for physical and intellectual disabilities. This project aims to evolve the existing committee formed by several countries into the first International Federation (IF) specifically for mental health football.
【Project Background】
The first international mental health football tournament was held in 2016. At that time, the International Football Committee on Mental Health (IFCMH) was established with the goal of promoting the international development of sports for people with mental health conditions through football. To further advance this and promote participation both domestically and internationally, the establishment of an IF was deemed necessary, and preparations are currently underway.
【Project Objective】
The first international tournament in 2016 (Osaka) had three participating countries, and the second in 2018 (Rome) expanded to nine countries. The third tournament, scheduled for 2020 in Peru, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
【Project Area】
Social integration through sports (based on the strengthening and protection of human rights)
【Methods】
Human resource development
【Outcomes】
The first international tournament in 2016 (Osaka) had three participating countries, and the second in 2018 (Rome) expanded to nine countries. The third tournament, scheduled for 2020 in Peru, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
【Voices from Participants and Partners】
We agree with the purpose of establishing an IF. However, many countries and organizations find it difficult to secure the necessary funds for its establishment and maintenance.
【Challenges and Lessons Learned】
There are significant differences in the definition of mental health conditions and social policies across different continents and countries. Furthermore, the level of organizational maturity in sports promotion varies greatly. Providing tailored organizational support that meets the specific needs of each country remains a challenge.
