Coaching Training Seminar (2022)
【Project Activities】
Conducted a coaching seminar led by the team staff of the French Men’s National Volleyball Team.
【Project Background】
During the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Okinawa City hosted the pre-games training camp for the French Men’s National Volleyball Team. This initiative was sparked by the city once again hosting their pre-tournament training camp for the 2022 Volleyball Nations League.
【Project Objective】
To train and develop volleyball coaches within the local community.
【Project Area】
Training of sports coaches/instructors
【Methods】
Human resource development
【Outcomes】
Coaches of elementary, junior high, and high school teams participated in the seminar. They received a direct one-hour lecture from the French national team’s head coach, complete with practical gestures, allowing them to learn from and reference the coaching methods of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medal-winning team.
【Voices from Participants and Partners】
“It was great to be taught directly by the head coach and coaching staff. Even though we couldn’t understand the language, we were able to comprehend through their movements.” (Seminar participant)
“It would have been even better if the interpreter was familiar with volleyball. I know it’s a lot to ask of a general interpreter, but if possible, we would prefer someone who plays the sport.” (Seminar participant)
【Challenges and Lessons Learned】
We found that due to the abundance of technical terminology in the seminar, it was difficult for a general interpreter to provide immediate translations. Moving forward, when conducting similar seminars, we anticipate achieving more effective results by preparing questions and corresponding answers in advance.
