【Summary】
The current number of persons with disabilities in Uzbekistan is 925,000, accounting for approximately 2.6% of the population. This figure is significantly lower than the WHO’s estimate of approximately 15% of the national population, Due to the issues with the national certification system of disabilities, there are actually many more persons with disabilities than this figure, and many of them have difficulties in going outside from home.

【Project Objective】
In order to accelerate social participation of persons with disabilities, the organizer utilized the Japanese inclusive sports which can make it easier to create an opportunity for the introduction of wheelchair-sports in the community and transfer the know-how.

【Outcome】

〇 The participants were able to bring the knowledge and skills gained from this workshop and that made it possible for them to create the opportunity to spread the knowledge and skills to their colleagues and students in their own communities, workplaces and school sites.

〇 In order to follow-up those who will become leaders and promote inclusive sport in the country in the future, the organizer and Uzbekistan State University of Physical education and sport had signed “Memorandum of Cooperation”(MoC) to establish the foundation of long- term collaboration.

〇 The project was triggered by the fact that “Education for person with disabilities and adequate inclusive education are not processing in this country” (Mr. Hashimoto, representative director of COIL). While many participants with disabilities were initially reluctant to participate the games and workshop, however, they gradually opened up through participation and enjoying inclusive sports. The project made them experienced positive behavioral change and that made it possible to create momentum to spread the excitement feelings.

〇 This workshop has given rise to the possibility of evolving the stages “Sport for Tomorrow” is aiming to achieve for people with disabilities in Uzbekistan, as inclusive sports are not only a means of social participation but also that of “enjoying”, “challenging” and “being impressed” through inclusive-sports.

Feedback from Local Contacts :

I would like to utilize what I have learnt from this workshop to produce as many people as possible who can repair wheelchairs at the upcoming Games hosted by Uzbekistan. We would like to actively promote exchange of coaches and trainers of para-sports with Japan and, we are keen to talk about support of the management of the Youth Para Games 2026 to be hold this country especially in terms of planning and operation of facilities to support wheelchair athletes.
